The average home presents hundreds of hazards to children’s health and safety. We as parents are rarely aware of them because they are so familiar, until, for example you see your kid trying to insert a key in the electrical socket.
But you don’t have to worry too much, because you can anticipate and guard against many of them.

  • Fire: fit a smoke alarm. Protect against open fires with a protective screen. Keep matches out of reach. Have gas pipes serviced to prevent toxic fumes from escaping.
  • Toxic substances: keep them all under lock: household chemicals, cleansers, bleach, paints, seals, varnishes, insecticides, pesticides, all medicines except the first-aid box which should be stored on a high shelf.
  • Preventing falls and accidents: by making sure that carpets are not worn or frayed; scatter rug should be taped in place or laid over non-slip mats. Fit window locks, particularly at upper storeys. Attach to the wall tall all heavy items of furniture to prevent them from toppling over.
  • Child-safety devices: these are for an extra degree of vigilance: socket covers, corner protectors for sharp table edges, safety film for glass doors or cupboards fronts, child-proof locks for appliances and cupboards and stair gates.

These measures could be decreased in extremeness according to age: once children have passed the self-destruct, try-anything years, you can afford to relax, a little.
