Furniture & Furnishings - Furniture selection
Written by richart khalil

Nowadays, furniture is available in a wide choices and styles to answer any need or purpose and suit any pattern of living or working. Furniture may be austere or luxurious, traditional or contemporary, of natural or man-made materials, free-standing or built-in.
Therefore, before you decide what kind or style of furniture to buy, ask yourself the following basic questions.

 traditional interior    modern interior

  1. Is the furniture flexible in function? Today’s homes are divided into several areas, each one designed for various activities; therefore it is more practical to buy multi-purpose furniture.
  2. Is the furniture comfortable? Comfort is related to sitting and sleeping and all connected activities. It is in relation with the age of the person using the furniture, so it is advised to use ergonomic furniture.
  3. How durable is the furniture and is it easy to maintain? Durability is related to well-made, detailed, with-stand hard use and easy to repair furniture, while ease of maintenance is depends upon the finish, the material of which the piece is made, and the fabric.
  4. Is the furniture in scale with the interior? Furniture should be in scale with the room and with the other objects in it. Furniture selected for a particular space should not interfere with the functions planned for that space.
  5. Is the furniture guaranteed? Will the manufacturer or the vendor replace the furniture or compensate the buyer if something goes wrong?
  6. Will similar pieces be required in the future? Although it is no longer fashionable to buy furniture in sets, it may be that similar pieces may be desired later. This is one advantage of open-stock styles, although even such styles are not available indefinitely.
  7. Are the children or pets in the household? The presence of children or pets requires more durable fabrics, weaves and finishes.
  8. Is entertaining frequent and does it include overnight guests? Frequent entertaining requires furniture that will serve more than one purpose – a sofa hide-a-bed, for example.

These guidelines allow you to bypass the attractiveness of a piece of furniture and search for its functionality and utility in your house.
