How to distribute color in a room? PDF Print E-mail
Color - Color distribution
Written by richart khalil

One general rule of color distribution is to use a darker value for the floor coverings, a medium color for the walls and furnishings and the lightest color for the ceiling. This is what people have become accustomed. In a given setting, however, one sees the dominant color as almost colorless. It seems to be the natural color in relationship to all the other colors in the room and those colors take their cue from the dominant or natural color.

color distribution - 1     modern color distribution

All the hues on the color wheel are available to use in the interior, but most successful interiors are built around three hues, varied in value and intensity. Bright, warm, advancing colors are generally used in small areas, to attract attention, while neutral grayed colors are planned for walls and floors. Too many equally intense colors will compete with each other and cancel the effectiveness of all.
As a conclusion, you should know that there is different ways to develop a color environment:

  • You can build your interior around a focal point (fabric, painting, flowers)
  • You can select three hues, to vary the values and intensities of two of them, and to vary the area in which they are applied, for an even distribution of color is boring and a common mistake.

Always consider you interior as an exciting journey, where you cannot allow yourself to get bored.
